Mysore’s most magnificent festival, Dasara is a
ten- day extravaganza of pageantry and pomp usually held in the
months of September and October. According to Hindu mythology
the festival celebrates the slaying of the demon Mahishasura by
the Goddess Chamundeeswari or Durga and the triumph of good over
evil.
An integral part of the city life, the Mysore Royal Dasara
Celebration, is one of India’s finest festival experiences.
During the 10- day festival period the city bursts into a
torrent of colours as street corners, houses, shops and
important buildings are illuminated and decorated.
The festival also offers visitors a sampling of some of India’s
finest music, theatre, art and dance at the various cultural
events that take place in the city during this period. Apart
from this there are traditional sporting contests like Wrestling
and Kabaddi as well as Food and Film Festivals. |

The highlight of Dasara is the Vijaydashami or tenth day procession. On
this day a procession of guardsmen in royal livery on horseback and
caparisoned elephants carrying the idol of goddess Chamundi in a gold
howdah march through the city streets. The procession begins from Mysore
Palace and concludes at the Banni Mantap. This is followed by a torch
light parade in the evening, a spectacular fireworks display and much
jubilation in the streets. |
